When you choose an airline approved carrier or kennel for your dog or cat, there are several factors to take into consideration. First, make sure that the carrier has proper ventilation so that your pet has maximum comfort and space to stretch out. Your cat or dog will enjoy a small pet bed inside, so think about placing a small cushion or bed on the floor of the carrier. Do you have a sticker or two to place on the carrier stating that there is a "live animal" in the carrier? This is great to have to remind airline employees there is a live pet in the kennel. Get water and food cups to place inside so your pet has some food and hydration during the long journey. Is the carrier or kennel tough or sturdy enough? You want your pet protected. Also, make sure all locks work and are extremely secure so your pet does not accidentally escape from the carrier. We've all heard horror stories of dogs or cats escaping their carriers when the pet owner is departing or arriving on a flight at the airport. You do not want this to happen to your best friend! Be absolutely sure the locks are secure and test them before you depart on your trip. Also, is the airline approved carrier both domestic and internationally approved? It is good to have one that is approved for both types of travel.
